Missing Bloodwork - Rh Negative
Posted by Moggie on January 25, 2009

A quick run down on a series of events.

Cas first saw the midwives at 13 weeks.  She had a million viles of blood drawn (most moms know what I mean)…allthe normal basics.

At each of her 3 visits, Cas was left feeling sort of out of the loop.  At one appointment, the midwife rushed out because she had an emergency to attend - we totally understand this, but Cas was left feeling really out of it.  It would have been nice if the nurse had come in to talk to her, but that didn’t happen.  Another appointment, the midwife talked about tattoos while using the dopler to listen to the baby - now, Cas is all for talking tattoos… but during that 30 seconds when she gets to hear the baby she’d like to hear the baby.  There were lots of little things… but in the end, she switched to a different practice.

Very happy with the new doctor, who spends plenty of time reassuring, offering advise, making suggestions and all around making Cas feel she made a good choice in her switch.  Actually, all of the office staff is very friendly.

Making a switch in doctors, you need your files transferred.  After we requested files to be faxed, the nurse requested the files to be faxed, not once but twice, Cas made another call to make sure the faxed all the bloodwork - because so far, it was all missing… again, the file was faxed, without the bloodwork.  The nurse was going to call about it again, but the doctor said since she was already 28 weeks along, they better just go ahead and have it redrawn - fun… no way, but necessary.

Cas gets a call last Thursday telling her she’s rh negative… and its important for her to get a shot of RhoGAM.  Not so much for Anna, but for any future pregnancies Cas may have.  If the father is also rh negative, it’s a non-issue… however, if he is rh positive, then after this pregnancy, Cassie’s body would likely view any future pregnancies as an invader and attack it.  Once pregnant (without this shot) there is nothing to do to save the baby (if her body begins to attack it).. so it’s important to get the shot.

Me?  I’m so mad at this other doctors office that they never noticed missing bloodwork or that they never bother to tell her about it.  Since I called and spoke with the office manager before switching and she assured me the midwives wouldn’t treat any patient that way, I almost feel as if they knew she was rh- and since they hadn’t told her yet (which would have proved my complaints correct), they intentionally haven’t sent over the paperwork from the file - they know the new doctor would have her redo the bloodwork anyway, so in the end, all would be ok.. maybe not, maybe that’s not what happened, but it sure feels fishy.
